Kelly Matson is Sacred Heart’s Mathematics instructor. She is a graduate of The University of Alabama and holds a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics Education. During her undergraduate she worked for The University of Alabama’s Mathematics Technology Learning Center. She credits this experience as what truly prepared her for a career in Mathematics education. She taught nine years at Locust Fork High School and two years at Munford High School before joining the Sacred Heart family in 2017. Both of her parents were educators, so she has been immersed in the educational world from the very beginning.
During her career she has taught Middle School math, PreAlgebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Pre AP Geometry, Algebra II, Pre AP Algebra II with Trigonometry, Algebraic Connections, Discreet Math, Precalculus, Pre AP Precalculus, and AP Calculus. Non- Mathematics courses include intervention and enrichment classes, basic skills classes, ACT preparation classes, and a History of the Catholic Church course.
She was a volunteer softball coach at Locust Fork High School for five years. She has served as sponsor for Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, National Beta Club, Alabama Wildlife Federation student chapter, Future Teachers of America, and Scholars’ Bowl Team. She has also held leadership roles as facilitator for the Building Based School Support Team, lead teacher and facilitator for the Problem Solving Team for Response to Intervention, School and District Dyslexia team member and screener, Textbook Committee member, Math Resource Team member, Continuous Improvement Plan team member, Scholarship Committee member, School Renaissance Learning/STAT 360 facilitator, and the A+nyWhere Learning System facilitator. She is AMSTI certified in seventh grade math and PreAlgebra, A+College Ready certified in PreCalculus, and Certified in Advanced Placement Calculus AB.
Kelly is a Catholic convert who grew up in a small protestant denomination. She intially attended RCIA to support a friend who was in the process of converting. While learning about the Catholic faith and traditions during these classes, she felt a calling on her life to convert to as well. In 2016 she was welcomed into the Catholic Church and is a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church parish.
In her free time Kelly enjoys being outdoors. She loves to fish, camp, hike, and rockhound. She is also a musician and enjoys listening to a wide range of music.
