Mr. Tyson is the English and Language Arts teacher and marketing coordinator for Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School.
Raised by a family of teachers himself, Mr. Tyson was exposed to great works of drama and literature at an early age. His mother taught English and Theatre for over 30 years in the public school system, and his great-grandmother was a distinguished professor of English at Jacksonville State University.
Mr. Tyson studied at JSU from 2007 - 2012 where he received his Bachelor’s of Arts in English Literature and Journalism. After college, Mr. Tyson spent years working as a professional journalist, business writer, and marketing specialist - an opportunity that allowed him to travel the community and present educational seminars on strategy, marketing, and technology to local business and non-profit leaders.
As a writer, Mr. Tyson has been featured in local, regional, and national publications. He has worked as a sports reporter for Consolidated Publishing, and has been published in the Birmingham Arts Journal, Deep South Magazine, AL.com, the Huffington Post, Patheos Catholic, Millennial Journal, and more.
Mr. Tyson began pursuing a career in education in 2015, and in 2019 he joined the Sacred Heart staff. He is particularly fond of American Literature - especially the short story - and the way it has shaped both regional and national identities throughout our history. He is a strong proponent of vigorous writing in the classroom, and he seeks to challenge his students to reach a higher potential through literary analysis, close readings, and criticism. Under his tutelage, students at the Sacred Heart Academy can expect exposure to classic and contemporary works of American and British fiction and poetry, as well as theater history, drama, and critical theory.
Mr. Tyson is a Catholic convert, having been raised in the Southern Baptist tradition for much of his early life. He entered the RCIA program in the fall of 2012 and was confirmed into the Church at the 2013 Easter Vigil. He is married to Lindsay Barton Tyson, a graduate of Sacred Heart school. They live in Golden Springs with their three school-age children and attend Sacred Heart parish. Mr. Tyson served on the parish council for three years and led the Jr. High CYO with his wife from 2013-2015.
Mr. Tyson is a passionate teacher and is blessed to work in an environment that allows him to serve the educational needs of his local parish while simultaneously pursuing his passions for literature and the arts.
