Mark Proper is the new principal at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School. He is coming to us from Pleasant Valley High School in Jacksonville, AL where he served for 11 years - first as assistant principal from 2009-2012 and then as principal from 2012-2020.
Overall, Mr. Proper has a combined 26 years of public education experience. He started his career in 1994 at White Plains School working in special education before assuming the role of alternative education teacher for Pell City Schools in 1996. In 1997, he joined the staff at Saks Middle School where he taught 7th grade math until 2004. From 2004 to 2009, he taught middle school math at Ohatchee High School, where he was named Calhoun County Middle School Teacher of the Year. During this time he was also inducted into the JSU Teacher Hall of Fame.
Aside from his success in the classroom, Mr. Proper also has a great deal of athletic coaching experience. During his career, he has coached football, soccer, baseball, basketball, track, and golf.
Mr. Proper is a 1988 graduate of Anniston High School. He attended college at Jacksonville State University where he earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1994. In 1996 he acquired a middle school mathematics add-on, and, in 2007, he completed his Masters of Science in Educational Administration.
Mr. Proper is married to Michelle (Regner) Proper, and they have two sons: Britton and Cole. Michelle currently works at Weaver Elementary as a paraprofessional. Britton is a communications major at JSU, and Cole is a public affairs/mass communications specialist in the US Army.
Mr. Proper and his family have been members of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church since 2005. Prior to moving his family's membership, they attended St. Charles Catholic Church in Jacksonville. It was a bitter sweet move since the couple had married at St Charles in 1995. He is a 4th degree knight in the Knights of Columbus and currently serves as the Deputy Grand Knight for our local council 3227.
Mr. Proper is excited to start this new chapter of his life and career at Sacred Heart School. He believes that God has a plan for everyone and that you must follow that plan. Prayer and life events have led him to SHC, and he plans to make the most of it. He will serve the students and staff to the fullest of his ability and wants to help the school reach even greater heights in Catholic education.
